India has more than 211 million students studying in schools of different boards across varying qualities of education. Of this, more than 70 per cent of the students drop out even before they reach Class 10. Even though the Government of India has made education compulsory until Class 8, the dropout rate goes unabated. According to the Joint Review Mission (JRM) report, nearly 2.7 million children drop out of school every year. The same would result in approximately 500 million people with less than five years of schooling by 2016.
As a fall out of this, the students who drop out of these schools remain unemployed or enter into the informal stream of employment, adding to the nation’s unemployed or underemployed pool. The reasons are many, ranging from inadequate education infrastructure, outdated courses, poor faculty support resources, mismatch with industry requirements and more. .
| Unit Code | Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) |
| Class 9–10 | 52.26 |
| Class 11–12 | 28.54 |
